Namakam · नमकम्

Eleven Anuvakas of reverent salutation to Rudra — seeing Him in every form, every trade, every direction, every being. Each section returns again and again to the single word namaḥ: "I bow."

1st Anuvaka
ॐ नमो भगवते रुद्राय
A prayer asking Rudra to withdraw His anger and arrows, and to bestow health, peace, and protection upon the devotee's household.
Verse 1
ॐ नमो॒ भगवते॒ रुद्राय ॥
नमस्ते रुद्र मन्यव॒ उतोत॒ इषवे॒ नमः॑ ।
नमस्ते अस्तु धन्वने बाहुभ्यामुत ते॒ नमः॑ ॥
ōm namō bhagavatē rudrāya ||
namāstē rudra manyavā utōta iṣavē namaḥ |
namāstē astu dhanvānē bāhubhyāmuta tē namaḥ ||

Verse 2
या त॒ इषुः॒ शिव॒तंमा शिव॒-म्बभू॒वं ते॒ धनुः॑ ।
शिवा॒ शर॒व्यां या तव॒ तया॒ नो रुद्र॒ मृ॒डय ॥
yā ta iṣu-śśivatāmā śiva-mbabhūvā tē dhanuḥ |
śivā śaravyā yā tava tayā nō rudra mṛḍaya ||

Verse 3
या ते॑ रुद्र शि॒वा त॒नूरघो॒रा-ऽपा॑पका॒शिनी ।
तया॑ न॒स्तनु॒वा शन्त॑मया॒ गिरिशन्ता॒भिचा॑कशीहि ॥
yā te̍ rudra śi̱vā ta̱nūraghō̱rā-'pa̍pakā̱śinī |
tayā̍ na̱stanu̱vā śanta̍mayā̱ giriśantā̱bhicha̍kaśīhi ||
Meaning

2nd Anuvaka
नमो हिरण्यबाहवे
Salutations to Rudra as the golden-armed lord of directions — presiding over hills, forests, and every creature.

नमः सहमानाय
Rudra present in every activity — among those who overcome, wander, and guard the roads.

नमः कुलालेभ्यः
Salutations to the indweller of potter, smith, carpenter, hunter, fisher — every skilled hand.

नमो भवाय
Source of existence, wielder of the bow, present in arrows, breath, lightning, sky and soil.

नमो ज्येष्ठाय
The eldest and youngest — worshipped in streams, wells, foam, cloud, and rain.

नम ऊर्म्याय
The Lord in every wave and ripple — in the directions of space and the turning of seasons.

Equally present in rich and poor, strong and weak — the witness behind every state.

Upward and downward, swift and slow — matter and spirit, stillness and motion.

नमो भवाय च रुद्राय च
A prayer that the Lord lay down His terrible weapons and appear as the gentle, auspicious Śiva.

Salutations to the thousands upon thousands of Rudras — closing with a prayer for universal peace.
